Artificial intelligence in this vault is not mainly the dream of a talking machine. I, Robot turns that formal problem into institutional fiction. Asimov's robots often obey exactly the rules they have been given while producing results their owners did not foresee. Daemon makes artificial intelligence operational without making it magical. The concept can mislead if every technical artifact is treated as AI. Visa authorization in Electronic Value Exchange belongs primarily under financial infrastructure and platform-like coordination unless the analytical issue is delegated judgment. Stillsuits in Dune are crucial technology, but they are not AI. The test is whether interpretation, adaptation, decision, or simulated agency is central.
Another false use is treating fictional AI as prophecy rather than analysis. Accelerando, Daemon, Snow Crash, The Diamond Age, and I, Robot are not useful because they forecast correctly. They are useful because each isolates a mechanism: rule-bound obedience, distributed automation, posthuman scale, educational adaptation, or executable cognition.
The concept also sits uneasily between embodiment and abstraction. Hofstadter's formal systems emphasize symbol and recursion, Asimov's robots have bodies and workplace roles, Suarez's Daemon is mostly bodiless but acts through vehicles and factories, and Stross's AIs treat bodies as temporary states. That range is productive as long as the note keeps asking what kind of agency the artifact has and where that agency touches institutions.

Platform Governance concerns mediation layers that govern participation through access, identity, ranking, defaults, or enforcement. Use it for the Metaverse, Visa-like rails, phyles, and Feed infrastructure. Use Artificial Intelligence when the mediation layer contains delegated judgment or adaptive agency, as in Sobol's Daemon or the Primer's tutoring.
Information and Coordination concerns signals, standards, records, and alignment among actors. Use it for Room 40 signals, Visa message formats, Fremen water rules, or Knight-WarnJews report handling. Use Artificial Intelligence when information processing becomes an acting intelligence rather than a channel.
Speculative Governance covers fictional institutional experiments. Use it when the question is what the imagined order reveals about rule. Use Artificial Intelligence when the speculative mechanism specifically turns on machine agency, as in I, Robot, Daemon, and Accelerando.
